Transparency International (TI)
Transparency and social accountability are a top priority of BCPNG we share the objectives of TI (PNG) in our desire to promote good governance and best corporate and ethical practice.
BCPNG has recently supported the TI (PNG) opposition to two amendments proposed by private Members of the national Parliament.
The first seeks to exempt MPs (Members of Parliament) from being dismissed from office for breaching the Leadership Code.
The purported reasoning is that MPs are too important to their electorates to be bothered by investigations into allegations of a breach of the Code, and too important to be dismissed if found to have breached the Code.
TI (PNG) and BCPNG reject this notion completely.
The second proposed amendment seeks to raise the provincial and district support grant ‘slush funds’ from K500,000 to K1,500,000.
We believe that this amendment is aimed squarely at providing Members with public funds with which they can purchase support for re-election at the 2007 national elections.
BCPNG will continue to work closely along side TI (PNG) to provide a framework for good business practices, and make a positive contribution to improving business standards of integrity, transparency and accountability wherever possible.
Following is some information about Transparency International:
The PNG chapter of Transparency International was formed in 1997. TI (PNG) is a non-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to fighting corruption both in international business and at the national level.
Corruption is extremely detrimental to society, hindering development, deterring investments and undermining democracy. As a result of the abuse of public power for private profit by dishonest officials:
- children go without an education
- hospitals are ill-equipped
- roads are left in disrepair
- people are driven into even greater poverty.
Rather than focusing on naming names or denouncing individuals or companies, Transparency International is committed to creating and working with broad coalitions representing civil society. It does not investigate or prosecute individual cases and is politically non–partisan.
