Law and Order

Stable law and order in Papua New Guinea, including an effective criminal justice system, is essential for investment and business.

BCPNG is represented on the CIMC Law and Order Sectoral Committee, a sub-committee of the Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council (CIMC).

Through this Committee we are currently involved in amendments to the Security (Protection) Industry Act 2004.

Together with the Australia PNG Business Council (APNGBC), we liaise with the Papua New Guinea and Australian Governments, urging them to ensure that the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary is effectively managed, resourced and trained, and that it is able to operate in a sound legislative and policy environment.

We commend the willingness of the Minister for Foreign Affairs - in particular - to engage with us (and the APNGBC) on Papua New Guinea policy issues. We are supportive of the relationship our government has with key Australian Government agencies, including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, AusAID and Austrade. We are looking to deepen our relationship with these agencies.

We are also pleased to note that, consistent to a mutual desire to develop partnerships where possible, all AusAid funded projects in Papua New Guinea are now open to tenders and participation by Papua New Guinean companies.

BCPNG also supports the Papua New Guinea Government’s actions to establish enhanced partnerships with Provincial Governments to improve policing operations, and proposals to secure the independence of the Police Commissioner.
