The annual two-day Business Forum was a major, bilateral business meeting between Australia and Papua New Guinea. The Forum was an avenue for the two Governments to meet with the private sector and discuss issues affecting businesses in Australia and Papua New Guinea openly with the private sector.
National Ministers Sir Moi Avei (Deputy Prime Minister and Mnister for Petroleum and Energy), Sir Rabbie Namaliu (Foreign Affairs and Immigration), Dr. Puka Temu (Lands and Physical Planning), Bart Philemon (Treasury), Bire Kimosopa (Justice) and Alphonse Willie (Internal Security) led a strong PNG delegation to the 22nd Australia Papua New Guinea Business Forum.
Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer made a video presentation after pressing issues required him to attend to important affairs in Indonesia. Mr. Downer said he supported the forum and that Papua New Guinea had made good progress on the economic reform front over the past couple of years.
Organised jointly by the Business Council of PNG and the Australia PNG Business Council (APNGBC), the 2006 Forum was staged at the Novotel Palm Cove Resort on the 14th - 16th of May, 2006.
2005
In continued collaboration with the APNGBC, we held the 21st Business Forum, held in Cairns in May of this year.
Well attended by Papua New Guinean senior Ministers, the Forum provided the opportunity for business to meet and papers delivered were of much importance to Papua New Guinea.
While some aspects of the economy were reported to be on their way to recovery and a brighter future, it is recognised that there is a lot more to be done in certain sectors of the economy. This includes the development of tourism, and many infrastructure issues such as improvement and efficiency of telecommunication in the country.
2004
In 2004 we co-hosted the 20th Australia Papua New Guinea Business Forum, a two-day Forum to discuss issues relevant to business between Australia and Papua New Guinea, and economic development in Papua New Guinea.
The Forum, held in parallel with the Queensland Papua New Guinea Business Co-operation Group Meeting, attracted approximately 150 participants.
We were delighted to have the participation of six ministers of the Papua New Guinea Government who attended throughout. Unfortunately, Australian Government political representation was limited to a parliamentary secretary who attended only the opening session.
